The Packers had fallen to 1–2, and earlier that week Rodgers responded to the growing panic with five famous letters:

“R-E-L-A-X. Relax. We’re going to be OK.”

On September 28, 2014, he went into Chicago and proved his point.

Rodgers went 22-of-28 for 302 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INTs as Green Bay beat the Bears 38–17. The Packers wouldn't punt once.

Green Bay went 11–2 the rest of the regular season, finished 12–4, reached the NFC Championship Game, and Rodgers won his second MVP.

Twelve years later, the Packers are 1–2 again.

I'm not saying history is going to repeat itself. No way. But if there were ever a good day to remember R-E-L-A-X, this is probably it.

I saw his fiancés tweet about the injury being “day by day”. I really hope it wasn’t serious and he can resume his career.

Luke Musgrave, Nick Collins, JerMicheal Finley….Sterling Sharpe. We don’t have a good track record for these types of injuries.

I’ve been trying to understand how the Packers went from pulling starting offensive linemen out of a hat for almost 20 years to whatever we’re watching now. I wonder if the answer goes back to 2005.

The Packers went 4-12 that year, still their worst record in the 21 years since. After losing Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera, Green Bay fell from 10th in rushing to 30th. Ted Thompson later admitted he hadn’t adequately replaced them.

Then McCarthy arrived, installed an Alex Gibbs-style zone-blocking system, and Green Bay began prioritizing athletic linemen who fit it.

The results were ridiculous: Sitton (4th), Lang (4th), Bakhtiari (4th), Tretter (4th), Linsley (5th), Tom (4th), Walker (7th). Different coaches and GMs, but the basic athletic OL prototype survived for almost 20 years.

LaFleur’s outside-zone offense initially fit that philosophy perfectly. But as the offense evolved toward more duo, inside zone and downhill concepts, the personnel philosophy seems to have changed with it.

Green Bay deliberately got bigger up front. Instead of asking “Can this guy move exceptionally well and pass protect?” it increasingly became “Can this much bigger guy move well enough while giving us more power?”

That may have cost Green Bay one of its biggest advantages. They used to find athletic college tackles in the middle rounds and figure out where to play them. Finding 325-335 pound linemen who are also highly athletic means competing for the same rare players everyone else wants.

And the payoff hasn’t materialized. The bigger 2025 line produced a worse running game, and now the 2026 line can’t consistently run block or pass protect.

Maybe we’re watching a team stuck between two OL philosophies.
The lesson from 2005 might not be “run outside zone again.” It might be to reestablish what a Packers offensive lineman is: prioritize athleticism, movement and pass protection, then use the broader run-game concepts LaFleur has developed around those players.

An athletic 305-pound lineman can still execute a power concept. A 335-pound mauler can’t magically become quick.

In 2005, an OL collapse pushed Green Bay toward a philosophy that became an organizational strength for nearly two decades.

Twenty-one years later, are they about to have to learn the same lesson again?

Im not saying we are a good team, with this o-line, we could lose out. Defense was ok first 2 games, couldnt stop bijon in the 3rd... we dont play a bijon like back the rest of the year. maybe gibbs.

Vikings defense is nuts, but their offense is dog water with their QB issues, Bears who knows where they are at, (Def not breaking scoring records) and detroit has muddled through the first part of the season. 9 or 10 wins takes the division this year IMO. and 5 of our remaining 14 is against these guys. North isnt the beast it was last few years

100% hopium and copium on my part i know. but i can find 8 more wins in there. esp if we get jacobs back , and micah back, and the offense line can make ANY marginal improvement.

It might be interesting to Packer fans to note Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark's stats so far in 2026:

It’s the NFL. Looking around the league there are surprising numbers and results everywhere for almost every team. Things hardly ever go like you think. I’m not saying that I expect or that I think we will get 10 wins after this 1-2 start and make the playoffs. But I’d bet that many were feeling down in the seasons where we did. It’s early, it’s the NFL, it could be worse and it could be better.

With the addition of Volson, Becton, and Tomlinson, it will be interesting to see how the starting 5 shakes out after a couple of weeks of these guys being in the building. Two of these three will be the new starters at the guard spots.

Gute pursuing free agent tackles shouldn’t be out of the question. Conklin or Decker may be a better option than what Morgan and Belton have put on tape this year.

The Packers might have caught a break as Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Vikings. But the Packers O-line was so woeful that it might not matter anyway!

Obviously fixing the O-line, but our special teams has looked good. I think the defense has been serviceable and often has just been put in bad positions and on the field way too much due to the inept offense. We need to win at least 2 of the next 3 and hopefully get Micah back. The 2nd half after our Bye is pretty rough, but potentially have Jacobs back as well.
