Which is the better written work?

Jokes aside, I love Lanterns. I didn't start watching it when it came out because I didn't have high expectations, but after seeing so many people say it was good, I gave it a shot and, man, it’s peak.

What I love most about this show is John's character development, specifically how he spends his entire life being manipulated by his parents, the Guardians, Zoe, and Hal, but at the end of E5, he just says "fuck you" to everyone. He rejects his parents and the Guardians by turning down the ring, kills Zoe, and takes the ring from Hal. And now, in E6, we see him empty after rejecting the ring; I can't wait to see the culmination of his arc in the final episode.

Hal is also a great character, and I love how his growth after everything that went down up to E5 is told, not from his perspective, but through the sheriff and young Hal (in E6 and E7)

I get the main criticism about not seeing the ring that much, and honestly, they have a point (even though I still love the show). The only time we really see it in action is in E5, and i hope E8 because theres was nothing in E7.

What are your thoughts on the series?

This sub isn't typically a place for high-brow literary analyses, but we should at least encourage basic discussion. As it stands, you can go into the comments of any comparison post and see everyone asserting their subjective take as objective truth (I'll add examples at the bottom). It's exhausting and anti-intellectual; discussions have no point if they devolve into hurled insults at the slightest implication of dissent.

There is not a single person under that post who actually supplemented their opinion with anything of value. I don't understand what the point of scaling writing is if the "scaling" is just presenting your opinion as the truth.

I feel part 1 excelled at many different areas of writing and different people will point out different aspects that made the series compelled , I feel whether it was dynamics, emotional depth or consistency etc it excelled at all of them but the most compelling aspect in my opinion was the... element of mystery , this was a huge factor that drove the narrative excellently and made the story intriguing. And it wasn't just limited to makima's character even though she was a substantial part of this element but the overarching plot excelled at its integration. The international assasins arc is a great example , it was intense , the stakes were high but an even more compelling factor was the element of mystery, you don't the what's going to happen next moment and honestly the sequence where they were teleported to hell and we were told about how dangerous the place truly is and how powerful the entities that resided there were. The aspect of gut wrenching horror was executed precisely.

Which character feels more consistently written throughout their respective series?

I absolutely loved the manga. It has become my second favorite from what I have read, although I have only read 5 manga's up until now. From the story, the art (oh the art) and the characters, just a wonderful manga overal. I only had the impression that the story pretty much rushed towards the ending, unfortunatly.

Personally, while I did enjoy the show, I really felt like it was overrated after finishing it. It was a great ride but after I saw people glaze it for years calling it a masterpiece and whatnot I was pretty underwhelmed. The character writing was good and wrote some believable redemption arcs and compelling character interactions, but it was nothing to lose my mind over and several characters were still one-dimensional while most of the writing got funneled into just a handful of them. The show also just teetered into what felt like cartoon filler territory at points, not that those bits weren't still entertaining, but they felt super random, weird, and unnecessary for the plot.

Koro-Sensei's dynamic with the students and how he genuinely helps them become better people in the process of the plot leading up to a pretty tearjerking ending is genuinely pretty great, but that's also the best part of the series in my opinion, and I can't see myself rating it higher than an 8 at the end of the day, though I am less generous with ratings than other people because I like to make ratings actually mean something (I don't just rate every show I like above a 7, if it's just "good", it's a 7, if it's "great", it's an 8, and so on, I love Baki it's very entertaining but I wouldn't rate it higher than a 6 at its best lol).

Idk if that's a hot take or not which is why I'm making this post.
