Discussion / Question How difficult is Onimusha?
(I haven’t played any Souls games. I am a working adult and barely have time to play games. I prefer story based games that are moderate in difficulty. I do not have time for soul like games where you keep on dying for hours in order to figure out the bosses moves. I prefer games that you can lock into after a heavy day at work. Eg. Resident Evil 9, God of War Ragnarok, Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk etc.
So do you think Onimusha is worth giving a shot or do you think it will be too tough for my likeness?
(Please react to this post if you are in the same position as me)

Onimusha is not a souls like game, my brother is a casual gamer, he did not have problem on the easier difficulty, it did have some spikes in difficulty on certain points, but he managed to get through it all

Well technically it is a souls game because you literally collect souls lol

That's Onimusha since 2002 . You can say DS is Onimusha like but not the other way around

There is no long back tracking if you die right?

Virtually none, plentiful checkpoints and it genuinely isn’t a difficult game
The theme and looks of the demons and the setting look far scarier than the difficulty implies
It’s actually a pretty chill action game

None that I experienced, they all(at least the major bosses) spawn you right at the start of the fight if you retry after losing

Bosses are decently challenging not anywhere on the difficulty of games like Souls (unless using cheese strategies) or more difficult action games
Bosses do require proper dodging, parrying etc depending on your reaction time and your action games playing experience you could be looking at a few deaths per boss
The boss retries place you immediately at the boss, but it doesn’t save your boss phases
Xp/souls don’t get dropped after death

I think the biggest issue tyou will have is the last boss. Big spike in difficulty for me anyway.
Game is rad. I suggest turning off the hud entirely

The regular enemies don't put up much of a fight. The bosses, however, are surprisingly challenging, where being good at parrying and reflex dodging is a necessity to win.

That’s what I am worried about. After a heavy work day, I may not have the focus to parry and dodge effortlessly. Sounds like I should just go for it and if the difficulty is a lot then reduce it.

Perhaps, I was playing on Action Difficulty, which is the harder of the two.

I find it easier than Sekiro but that is if you learn the decisive combat style of the game

Follow up question:
Anyone who played Black Myth Wukong? How difficult is that? Is there a setting to make it easier? Are they long back tracking checkpoints after you die in a boss fight or you just start from the boss fight itself?

I found Black Myth Wukong to be more difficult than Onimusha the action elements just aren’t as polished
For example you can take damage when executing a parry
Black Myth Wukong has way more mini-bosses and run backs if you die
I personally recommend Onimusha it’s just a more polished action game BMW just feels disjointed in its action elements

Having played these back to back actually, I've enjoyed bmw more. Onimusha has difficulty settings and you can change it after you die to boss fights if you want or can't kill a boss. Usually save checkpoints (shrines) are just before bosses so no backtrack at all. Also, if you die to a boss you can just press retry for most of them and you get spawned in the arena, but there's an option to load last save instead of retry as well which gets you just outside the arena at the last shrine which usually is nearby as I've said, no backtrack, in case you want to change equipment.

Wukong is pretty challenging, Souls like level. Maybe even harder as you actualy have to learn the boss and can't just go grind souls and better gear and one shot all the bosses.

I’m finding it Easter then a souls born game to learn boss attack patterns

it's not soulslike but some bosses will challenge you and the final boss will indeed challenge you.

If you are an experienced gamer, only the final boss will kill u several times. It Is hard, It took me a couple hours. Everything else will be easy or average difficulty and you will have a lot of fun.

Not that hard. I wouldn’t call it “easy” but only a few fights will cause you any primes problems. It’s average difficulty.

The game is harder than those games but much easier than souls games. You won’t be stuck on bosses for hours but it will take you a few attempts to get movesets down. The combat is very fair. The fights are all just unique.

I’m no good at souls games, but I managed to complete this game. Action difficulty will have you dying a few time against bosses to learn their attacks. Story difficulty was a breeze for me, it even has options for prompts but I would recommend turning them off

It depends. I finished the game on Action difficulty, and the only boss I struggled against was the final boss. All the others I either beat on my first try or within three tries. That being said, I did feel like it properly challenged me, and I'd consider myself an action game fanatic. If something like Devil May Cry is the art of offense, then Onimusha is the art of defense, but it's handled really well, if you ask me.
I'd say that most people would be able to finish the game on Story mode, and plenty would also be able to beat it on Action mode. Some fights can be difficult, but overall the game isn't punishing like a Soulslike. You don't lose anything or get respawned at a point where you have to do a long runback. If you get killed by a boss, it simply resets you to the beginning of the fight.
It's what I would call an action game with Soulslike elements, but it's not a true Soulslike. As I've said above, it's not punishing, just challenging. Overall, it's just a fun game that tests your reflexes and pattern recognition when it comes to boss attacks, because depending on the attack, it's important to know whether it should be blocked, parried, deflected, grab-reversed, or Issen'd. But it's not anything close to the same difficulty as, say, Sekiro. It's pretty comparable to the Ghost of Tsushima franchise in terms of difficulty.
Also remember there is a demo!

Don't believe the people who compare it to a souls game brother. It's not like that in style or difficulty.
I have the platinum, which involves beating it twice, once on hardest difficulty.
It is not a "hard" game. BUT let me say this. There are a few fights which can spike quite hard. I would say mainly the end boss. Even with him, one you learn him, he's nothing compared to some souls bosses.
The timing for parries and dodges in the game are very generous. It is the kind of game that will make you feel like you're better than you are, that is like the opposite of souls games.
Don't be turned off by what people say about difficulty. It's a fantastic game with some of the most addictive combat I've played. Just jump in, keep going, learn bosses and be patient. You will be fine and experience a brilliant game.
If you wanted a number I'd say
6/10 difficulty
