Knowing that the next family could very well turn it into something serviceable and you have to live with that while your mother in law who lives with you with keeps telling you how you should’ve fixed it up instead of buying a new house because the ceilings aren’t high enough
Meanwhile you’re living in a luxury apartment in a bad part of town and your landlord is kinda emotional week-to-week. So any given month you could have a decent spot or just get straight up evicted, and no matter what the commute sucks
It's a weird situation where if you're willing to get rid of a 1st round QB a few years into their rookie contract there's no such thing as an overpay because they obviously suck.
But at the same time, there's always that "what if", and there's always the possibility that if he does put it together it looks like you got fleeced.
But I lean to the side of if O'Connell was willing to let him go for a 5th, there's probably no hope and they were lucky to get anything in return.
We really went from a QB competition between JJM/Murray, to JJM being #2, to then JJM being #3 but the backup QB is a "week to week" decision, to trading him for a 5th after the QB who won the battle had an absolute shitter of a game.

Kind of my thought too. If he's not worth hanging on to as a backup to 2 injury prone qb's, he must be mega ass. I know they need to say positive things about him for PR, and he and Kyler were "battling for QB1" but I'd be curious to see how close that scorecard really was.
On paper this is a bad move. This tells is how truly hated he is here. We would have to REALLY hate him to do this. There has to be behind the scene stuff thst we don't knoe about yet.
It could just be that they don't believe in his potential anymore and since they weren't planning on playing him, they may as well cash out and get something.
I mean if I was the Viking GM and I liked McCarthy as a person, I might feel the best thing to do for him would be trade him to another team and let him get a fresh start.
I mean I think most teams would take a 5th round pick for their 3rd string quarterback, I don’t think it has anything to do with him being hated. They just didn’t see him being the future and a 5th was enough to move him
I love when people say this as if there aren't dozens and dozens of highly drafted QBs over the decades that had a ton of hype and completely washed out of the league in a few years. It's highly unlikely he improves and that's just statistics.
I am absolutely positive that KOC wanted Drake Maye and give the house to go get him. Kwesi said no and said JJM was the safer, less expensive option. Kwesi and JJM are now both out.
Had we gone into the offseason with him on the roster we would’ve declined his 5th year option and then gotten nothing for him because no GM is giving up assets for a guy who they could get for free the following offseason
We were basically at the crossroads where we needed to decide if we were okay getting nothing for him and it looks like we weren’t
1: they just don’t like him as a prospect. Better to get a 5 now then cut him in March

He wanted to play and was causing a stink about it. Imagine players whispering in the background that JJ could do better than Kyler, that’s how you lose the lockerroom. Why I believe teams didn’t even want guys like Tebow or Kaepernick as backups. The team is too good to let their #3 be a cancer.
I think it is quite clear that he was a negative in the locker room. The current Vikings organization are very good about keeping their issues in-house without much for leaks, but the things that came out about JJM were always bad. Not listening to coaches, immaturity, believing he should start rather than proving he should.. sometimes, you just need to cut the line and move on for anything you can get. If we are taking a 5th back for him, clearly the organization feels he is worth very little to keep around.
I agree. He has always seemed immature to me and some things leaked out reinforcing that. Also the 9 alter ego thing is a sign of immaturity imo. I speculate that he is turning into a cancer and knowing they are cutting ties with him in offseason, this move is good.
He also might just need a change of scenery and different scheme. He seems nice enough so wish him well.
I feel like we should have just held on if all were getting is a 5th rounder...
Edit: it's not that crazy to want a backup who's shown SOME success in our system especially since Wentz/Murray aren't the paragons of durability and our offense looks like booty with them on the field
We have a new GM in the building. McCarthy went from 1st string to 3rd string in less than 10 months. This fanbase is so attached to this guy I quite literally don’t understand it. He’s terrible
Also Van Noy has to stay on roster too since he burned his last elevation. They were playing the waiting game and milked it. IMHO they knew they were trading when they sat him for last preseason game and now they need roster spots.
Honestly, the thing that gets me is that we have two very injury-prone quarterbacks and now brosmer is our third and he looked truly awful last year. There will be a time I would bet money brosmer plays this year simply because of injuries.
I'm actually kinda sad, I still had hope that he could come around. Yeah, he didn't pan out, injuries derailed his rookie season and stunted his growth as a NFL QB but I genuinely liked the kid.

KOC must be pretty sure on him, because if he leaves and is anything but unplayable that will be the second functional QB that KOC has let walk for almost nothing.
There was uncertainty surrounding Kirk’s recovery from the achilles, Dimes had only be a partial season back up. Darnold was a full season starter that was allowed to walk and win a SB, and he’s seen JJ every season for 3 years.
They have seen enough. At least they recouped something. I compare it to Paxton Lynch. Had Elway not tried to avoid the sunken cost on Lynch and just drafted Josh Allen he might still be GM.

Hm. I know everyone is low on him but Kyler and Wentz haven't shown anything yet to make this move make sense. Could've just let Kyler walk if he stays mid and try 9 again next year. They must've really just wanted to move on from him/he wanted to move on as well.
My lord, this sub has no idea how to evaluate trade value. We won. We made a mistake and get to move on. Getting a 5th for someone who couldn’t beat out Wentz is a miracle. Sunk cost fallacy is real and we decided to gain a pick, not have to pay him next year, and rid ourselves of a boat anchor.
Because he is worse. The league has a huge history of first round QB’s that couldn’t play at this level and the teams that drafted them moved on from them. Heck, two of them are still with the Vikings. McCarthy might as well change his name to Brady Quinn jr at this point.
It's easy to say "he's gonna ball out for the Giants, isn't he?" but let's be real, it's the Giants and QB play. They're as cursed at the position as we are, with their one Eli saving grace.

Both Kyler and Wentz are injury prone and haven't looked great, so I would have rather kept the 5th tbh. You just know we're going to have to see Brosmer again and regret this.
Maybe it's hopium, but I feel like there has to be another shoe to drop here. We are 3-0, have an ELITE defense, I guess it takes 2 to tango, but I feel like the Vikings are in the perfect position to make a huge trade to bring in a QB they think can take us all the way.
I'm eyeing the 0-3 chargers who have a brutal schedule, and overpaid the shit out of Herbert, they COULD really look to use this season now to offload that contract and tank for a high pick in a loaded QB draft class. I do feel like they would have wanted JJ as a part of that trade, even valued at a 5th rounder, so the fact that we have the pick and not JJ makes me feel like this is more unlikely than im already thinking. Would be crazy though, and the Vikings could use a little crazy with how dog shit Kyler Murray is.
I was laughing so hard yesterday during the game when the announcers were talking about how KOC wants to develop and give JJM the time he needs to become the future franchise quarterback. Sometimes it is a little too obvious that they did not do their homework for the game lol.
Fox has really fallen of of a cliff when it comees to NFL presentation imo. Plus, the picture quality of yesterday's game was pixelated, artifact ridden trash.
McCarthy honestly showed like little to no improvement this entire off season. His preseason was just as bad as his last seasons play. Anyone who thought we’d get a 1st or even a 2nd round pick for him are sadly delusional. McCarthy was flat out not good
5th round was the best we were getting JJ on his current market. This is a great deal for the Vikings and also gives JJ a new home with a coach that wants him in the building. Love this all around
I hate this trade honestly. The QB play we’re getting currently isn’t any better than JJM in 2025 and I do not understand why we wouldn’t hold him and hope for development vs a useless draft pick
People who wanted us to keep him longer... what more did you want? Does he need to actively lose multiple games while starting all the snaps before youre sure we need to move on?
Its clear he had personal issues and couldnt get past them, I wish him the best but in the NFL its super unlikely he will have a better chance to do well.

KOC must have absolutely HATED this dude and Teasley must not of been impressed by him either. If both are ready to move off of him this is huge indictment of what they think of JJM
A fifth?? I don’t hate trading him but given Kyler’s injury history and Wentz’s age and injury history… idk, I wouldn’t have moved him for less than a third.
What sucks is now having to root for JJM to always be terrible and hope he never gets good. I guess that’s likely but still sucks to have to root for that.
