discussion/convo starter/talk flair Question: why do people seem to think it’s okay to be sexist towards men?
123
u/badnack 3h ago edited 1h ago
Frustration I think. Men have been the dominant gender in term of working position, social opportunities etc.. women are catching up, and they have a Lot of frustration bottled up. This said, it still does not excuse who’s sexist.
Edit: fixed typo

All this singing kumbaya nonsense does is reinforce the abusive power imbalance between men and women.
Anyone who lives in the real world can tell you this. But this community seems to be existentially terrified of facing the reality that inequality still exists and has real life consequences that can only be combatted by acknowledging that different places in the hierarchy… are different from eachother…
Before you put the language women use on an equal playing field to the language men use, you need to first dismantle patriarchy. If you do the first before the second, you’re doing nothing but policing the victims disproportionately.
It’s so painfully obvious and everyone here is genuinely braindead.

"An eye for an eye" and "turn the other cheek" are both just dumb advice. Not because they're wrong, but because they're context dependent and neither quote offers you any context.
Sometimes turning the other cheek is the right move. Sometimes an eye for an eye is the right move. Sometimes taking 2 eyes for 1 eye is the right now.
All of us being blind is preferable to only the wicked having sight.

Look at the Cornell case rn. An entire fraternity were notified via Snapchat and welcomed that SA was happening at the frat to a drugged woman and no one did anything. Not only did the 7 men participate, the over 50+ men who didn’t stop it, and the hundreds of administrative faculty at Cornell not follow through to punish the perpetrators who instead ask the men to write an apology letter…. For a crime. I think a t-shirt is by far a small piece of backlash for a society that accepts the type of behavior rn

Because after decades of misogyny, many women now have hit a point of resenting the people who have historically repressed their freedoms. This hatred is not helpful to the dialogue, and neither is the patriarchy that created the conditions for it forming, but it is now something that must be addressed in any conversation about gender equality because people on both sides tend to forget that "equal" means you shouldn't hate either

I'm a dad to two girls. Divorced. It bothers me when people say shit like, "finally giving mom a break, huh?"

The pendulum of discrimination swung past the principled goal of the Civil Rights movement of not judging people by their race and gender, and kept going to what some call “reverse discrimination” (which is really just discrimination).
As such, many people believe that certain people are inherently victims while other people are inherently oppressors.
5
u/Thin_Theory5388 2h ago
Some people bring up oppression because they are concerned about oppression. But many, many others bring up oppression in order to give license and escape criticism for their own bad behavior. This is an example of the latter.

Because men get judged for what the men before them did regardless of if they turned out to be good and honorable people with a respect for all humanity. It's for that same reason white people are seen as not being able to be the victim of racism.
3
u/JakoGaming 2h ago
Because some women won’t feel truly equal until they have gone past the mark.
I’d say for as different as men and women are, and always will be, we are pretty god damn close to equal. Both genders have their advantages and disadvantages. People like the woman in the photo are idiots that only want the advantages with none of the disadvantages.
4
u/wetbutt32 2h ago
The draw of being an oppressor has no race or gender. Many oppressed people simply yearn to be the oppressor, not for oppression to end. The example given fits here, it’s about how you make me feel inferior so therefore I will make you feel inferior. I view all openly sexist commentary the same, it sucks. These days, most men will hide their sexism because it’s less socially acceptable. It’s not the same for women right now, and a lot of them are showing us who they are.

Yes. I was looking for this answer.
It is like when employees get together to make fun of the boss a little. (Notice I said “it is like” not the same.)
The boss has the power. They normally make life more difficult for the employee. Even though the boss actually needs the employee to run their business. The boss should not be power tripping in the first place. So, only option left is to rag on the boss a bit. Then move on with your day.
I am referring to the shirt here, mostly.
Same reason why I have to deal with it when everyone makes fun of Christians. Or white people (even other white people).
You know that your ancestors or race have made things harder for everyone. You just have to suck it up. My faith being roasted sucks, however, I know that it is nothing compared to the hurt that has been caused (even though I do not agree with those actions, obviously). So, you empathize instead of attack.

But between growing up with a single mom and two sisters and 4 female cousins, and spending 7 years in the army watching women bitch that shit wasnt equal when they had lesser standards when it came to Physical Fittness standards, and not to mention the ones who surprisingly showed up pregnant before a deployment, meaning they didnt have to go.

3
u/Rejnu 1h ago
Because some people are simply misandrist, and sexism against men is often taken less seriously or even treated as socially acceptable depending on the context. Sexism doesn't suddenly stop being sexism just because the target is male. Obviously, that doesn't mean men and women experience sexism in exactly the same ways or to the same extent in every area of life. But statements like "men are inherently trash", mocking men specifically because they're men, or treating their problems as irrelevant based purely on their gender are still sexist. You can acknowledge misogyny and the discrimination women face without pretending misandry doesn't exist. Those aren't mutually exclusive positions.

It's something that has increasingly grown to bother me recently. The majority of my friend group are women and I work in a predominantly female field.
Whilst I get along with & love everyone, I can't help but notice how casually sexist so many are. Even towards me in "jokingly" way. I'm always hearing how much they hate men, how men can't be trusted. There was a joke about genital mutilation once or how men need to be silenced and put in camps. One person even said she's a misandrist and is proud to be.
But I get a "pass" as they say.
Now again, I know most of them are jesting and women have taken an abusive and subservient role throughout history. I get it. But I'm also not white. So it rings like an echo of when racists express approval toward "one of the good ones" when they just so happen to like a non-white person.

I'm a typical straight dude (football, fishing, beer, beard, I'm "basic" apparently, you get the idea) so I see a shirt like that and see it as a call to power that may make someone who's been made to feel lesser than better.

I dont know if there is a name for this, but it's like a reversed role situation. Groups of People who have been oppressed in some sort of way, there ends up certain people who, after the world changes, tries to make it so their group is now better than the original group. It happens with religion, race, sex, etc. Not everyone from those groups, (such as women) think they are better, just a select few who do so. Sometimes it isn't even on purpose. Most people fight for equality, but some accidently end up fighting for superiority, in a way.

To anyone who isn’t for subservient women or immediately triggered by the rhetoric, it’s purely a middle finger to those bearing patriarchal ideals. Not that misandrists don’t exist but if you talk to real life women you’d find they don’t find themselves superior, rather, in a political climate that puts their bodies up for legislation, without the consideration of those who live in them.

Think about human history: For a very long time, women have been abused and harmed by men. As things change and women step into more power, the pendulum swings in the opposite direction and those centuries of pain and suffering express themselves, for better or worse, as "punching back".
Women feel safe enough to start speaking up and fighting back. Unfortunately, this isn't constructive and actually causes more harm to sexual relations. However, like all thing in the universe, the pendulum will gradually come to rest at center.

It doesn't suggest equality, quite the opposite. Misandry and misogyny reinforce one another so hating someone back is never going to fix anything.
I understand that very few men and women are radical, but sadly they tend to be the most noticeable ones painting a bad picture of their sex.
I also understand why some people think that misandry is somehow justified. To be fair, there are many instances of a previously oppressed group lashing out at their past oppressors.
Misandry is counterproductive, one could argue it opposes healthy feminism, but that's also something to be properly addressed

It isn't ok. However men have had fifty years of instruction that sexism is bad and not to do it. Women have been told sexism is bad and to call out the men who did it. They really haven't been educated to look at their own behaviour like we have.
Doesn't mean that a great many haven't figured it out but still, there is a cultural lag. Just keep poimtimg out the genderswap test. The slow ones will catch up.

Because people like that have low intelligence and low emotional maturity yet still think they are the smartest people in the room

Because they keep getting away with being sexist, exactly like people in the comments here. I was trafficked as a teen, the VAST majority of people who helped traffick kids where i was were women, a woman at the TTI facility i was in participated in the sexual assault of every new resident woman for YEARS. All of the women who were supposed to be mandatory reporters failed to do so, many BECAUSE of their hatred/dislike of men/boys (most were boys under 18).
Right now, women are better educated, better employed, and have people who actually give a shit about what happens to them. Men get arrested more, charged more, and given longer sentences for women FOR THE SAME CRIMES, and boys under 18 are charged as adults at 2x the rate of girls.
Middle and upper class white women specifically have done their level best to destroy my life, the lives of countless others. Do I hate all women, all white women, etc for this, of course not. Is it seemingly allowed for women to hate all men? Will i get ripped for even trying to defend myself against the women who hurt me and raped my friends? The answer to those seems to be yes.
The people who are being sexist towards men are not feminist, they are not progressive, they are ignoring actual structural issues because they dont care if other humans suffer.

Because men allow them to be. If there were a Purge night, no woman that would play along would survive. We made them comfortable and gave them everything and what did they do with it? 1 issue voter, their fucking crotch

Because they’re idiots and think revenge is justified. Combatting discrimination with discrimination instead of being the better person they claim they are

Because it's like being classist against billionaires.
While I'm sure not all billionaires are terrible people, it's ok to make jokes against them because it speaks to a general truth.

I think that shirt is silly but as a man, I get it. Like I’m a straight Hispanic guy but I always got along better with the women in my life but unfortunately some men are just insufferable. I don’t think it excuses how sexist some women can be towards men but i understand where it comes from when there are a large amount of men that think it’s okay to not treat women as their equals.

I'm a lifelong liberal man, and yet I've NEVER felt more hated by my own community, especially the LBGTQAI community of which my wife is a part of.
I don't see many "women suck", "I hate women", "kill all the women", "spay all women", "the world would be better off with no women" shirts around.
Hatred is hatred. This shit is why no one is dating nowadays and why men are being pushed Alt Right.
I swear the last generation of kind, caring, good liberal women was the 1990s and 2000s.
