Meta We have added flairs to the sub

Hello everyone, we've added flairs to aiwars in order to help people find and comment on posts they're interested in seeing. Currently they are not being enforced as mandatory, though this may change in the future, depending on how they are received. We would ask that people please start making use of them.

Discussion should be used for posts where you would ideally like to see spirited discussion and debate, or for questions about AI.

News is of course for news in the AI sector. Things like laws being passed, studies being published, notable comments made by a prominent AI developer or political figure.

Meme should ideally be used for single image-based posts which you do not expect to prompt serious discussion. Of course discussion is still welcome under such posts. If you want to use a meme to make a serious point and have additional explanatory text for why you feel strongly about the message being expressed and the type of discussion you'd like to have, that can be categorized as Discussion.

Meta is for discussion about the subreddit itself and other associated AI subreddits or comments.

Use your best judgement as you categorize your posts. Please do not misuse them, they are for everyone's benefit.

Here is why we have two subs - r/DefendingAIArt and r/aiwars

r/DefendingAIArt - A sub where Pro-AI people can speak freely without getting constantly attacked or debated. There are plenty of anti-AI subs. There should be some where pro-AI people can feel safe to speak as well.

r/aiwars - We don't want to stifle debate on the issue. So this sub has been made. You can speak all views freely here, from any side.

If a post you have made on r/DefendingAIArt is getting a lot of debate, cross post it to r/aiwars and invite people to debate here.

Discussion To Pro-AI: All We Have To Do Is Wait

Post image
• Upvotes

to my fellow pro-ai people, remember that tech regressivists and art regressivists have never once "won" in trying to suppress the future

every time, they're dragged kicking and screaming into the future by progressives as we create a better world. eventually they start to see the value in the new ways, and as they becomes more accepted by society, they finally go: "hm, maybe this wasn't so bad after all"

digital art, photography, computing, calculators, television, electricity, automotives, aeronautics - the list is basically infinitely large. the oppositionists never win, because most people don't want to live in a stagnant world

i've been following AI for a long time, and as it has developed, the anti beliefs lose more and more steam. at this point i think all it will take is one more major breakthrough in art or math or science for most of society to get on board!!

so when you're feeling down, just curl up, get cozy, and have a nice sleep. because no matter what, in some years time, people will be looking back and going "wow, those people were really ahead of the curve!!!" once everything is normalized, and we aren't demonized anymore

the people of tomorrow's world will be happy that we spoke up for something that ended up making life so much better and richer!!

peace and love to everyone 💛 i can't wait for the better world that the future will bring!

An honest question for those who share this view: fair enough, it might work for you, but do you think your opinion is the most important one?

Post image

You might not see it that way, and fair enough, but why shouldn't someone have a different definition of an artist, or find others who recognize them as one? Personally, I’m not concerned about how this applies to me, since I never even intended to call myself an "AI artist," but reading things like that really makes me wonder how someone can hold that view from a purely logical standpoint.

Discussion Why do so many Pro-AI people think that they're oppressed?

Recently, I've seen a lot of posts of ai-generated images that include Anti-Ai people yelling at/demeaning people who generate AI images, which I don't think holds much truth. Yes, there are some people who voice their opinion as such, but pro people seem to portray everyone on the Anti-Ai side like that. Honestly, I've seen a ton more Pro-AI people sending things like death threats and hate comments to the Anti-AI side. Also, I've seen a few AI-generated images of someone talking about AI-gender??? It really just looks like you're trying to make yourself a minority just to say that antis are transphobic or something, while the post in itself seems transphobic, to equate gender identity to AI of all things, which isn't even human. To me, it feels like people are making up fake arguments from antis just to seem like they're in the right because they can't win a real argument with one. Is this true? I'd like to hear someone else's thoughts on this.

A counter to "AI pollutes the enviornment"

• Upvotes

I've seen a lot of people hate on AI (specifically on Reddit). A large portion of them talk about the "environmental effects", which don't hold any merit in my opinion.

Before we get into why I think this, I want to make it clear that AI does harm the environment, but not nearly to the degree people say it does.

First, let's go to driving (If you can, I'm sure the average age of people on this subreddit is below 16). Driving releases greenhouse gases. Over a fifteen-year time span, the average gas car releases 40 to 50 metric tons; training a new AI model takes about 200-300.

Now this may sound bad, but then you remember that MILLIONS of people drive every day. Cars release upwards of 10.4 MILLION metric tons daily; AI's footprint is a fraction of that.

Now, we move on to water. While yes, datacenters use water, it is a fraction of what golf courses use each year. This is by far the least defensible claim people make.

Now, energy: I'll state it straight up; data centers use a large amount of energy produced by fossil fuels, which is harming the environment. Power consumption is the largest issue pertaining to the environment, but it is a very, very solvable problem.

This brings me to my next point: Regulation. Instead of whining and hating on AI, why don't we just try to fix the issues? Why don't we make regulations that force companies to build data centers using renewable energy? Why don't we regulate, all data centers must use close looped system? We can fix all the minuscule problems listed above simply by legislation.

Now, you may say, "OP, AI is totally useless; why hurt the environment at all!!1111"" This simply isn't true.

You know what? I'll even give you the benefit of the doubt and ignore all the previous achievements of AI. AI will be the most transformative technology in human history. Imagine running a country full of geniuses 24/7, all trying to cure cancer. That is the goal. Imagine a world where people don't have to worry about dying, and we can explore the stars. We never started making AI to make "Will Smith eating spaghetti"; we started making AI to improve humanity. Ignoring what's capable now (it's already extremely useful), AI is being made to advance the human race far further than we could ever imagine.

From a videogame development subreddit; the fact that the Anti behavior has gotten so bad that a presumably neutral arbiter of a mod had to come down and say anything even LIKE this just goes to show that NO. It's NOT a minority. it's NOT rare, and that Antis will actively abuse any system in an effort to stop RELEVANT conversations.

Discussion Watching my top subs turn into echochambers is a heartbreaking reality.

Thumbnail

Its really sad seeing communities you once loved being apart of turn into echochambers of hate.

This is in regards to a post on a relatively popular on an art subreddit that is anti ai.

In said post (which was thankfully removed by moderators) was a person celebrating that they were blocked by Witty. With a screenshot of a "tuff" meme showing their pride.

And personally, ive debated with witty many times, ive insulted her, made negative claims against her, and even shared love of an intrest of music with her. She isnt someone who blocks just cause, more often than not, she blocks for outright insane comments against her. (One example I can bring up is someone comparing her to chris chan. (An individual who sa'd his own mother))

Its very disheartening to see. This subreddit used to be about supporting eachothers art works and giving advice on what and how to improve, share brushes for digital work, and share techniques with many artforms. Now its just discussions about how they are gping to own the pros or some stupid bullshit.

When youve been blinded by hate, you stop doing what youve loved. Which was making art. I barely ever see art posted on this sub unless its related to witty. Even "John Anti" is a parody of wittys sona. NOTHING is original here😭.

Its pathetic to see an anti sub claim ai has no originality and then do stupid shit like post about ONE individual. Yes, the mods recognize that half the shit being posted is hate slop, they do their best, theres even a rule abt no witty posts. Yet the hate slop prevails.

Yes, Witty will post abt a popular franchise, game, character, whatever and get basic shit wrong. Names wrong, the story wrong, the entire goal of a character wrong. Shit that someone who actually cared enough to look into it could figure out in 5 minutes. And then people flood the comments correcting her.

And thats the reaction.

People LOVE being right. Especially when someone else is very obviously wrong. You get to correct someone, explain why theyre stupid, post screenshots of it somewhere else and have 30 other people tell you how right you are. It feeds your ego. You feel smart, you feel justified, and in this case you even get to feel righteous because witty represents something you already hate.

Witty is literally the perfect person to feed peoples ego.

She posts something blatantly wrong, you correct her, she argues back, you screenshot it, someone posts it here, everyone talks abt how stupid she is, and now hundreds of people are interacting with something she made.

Then she does it again.

And somehow nobody sees the cycle.

Im not saying everything she posts is fake or that she doesnt believe anything she says. Shes still a person. She obviously enjoys creating shit. She draws, makes characters, has interests, likes music. I mean shit she just made a song and as an anti, its fucking good idc i have honestly found myself humming it in the hallways at work, or listening to it while i draw. Majority of her online content can be rage bait while she still genuinely enjoys creating things. Those two things arent mutually exclusive!!

And yes, shes cringe. Extremely cringe sometimes. Im not arguing against that. But shes also right in a lot of ways when she says people cannot stop talking about her.

There are literally subreddits with rules saying STOP POSTING ABOUT WITTY because people cannot fucking help themselves. Even in spaces that supposedly hate what she represents, she somehow becomes the topic of discussion for what feels like more than half the posts about ai, whether its pro ai or anti ai.

Think about how insane that is.

You hate this person, you think shes stupid, you think her opinions are worthless, you know she wants attention, and your response is to give her attention every single day.

Then when somebody points that out, suddenly theyre "kissing wittys ass." Or assuming im a pro in disguise or something. IM VERY OBVIOUSLY ANTI AI.

I disagree with witty on plenty of shit. Ive argued with her, insulted her, and called her out myself. Im not defending every dumbass thing she says. Im explaining WHY she does it and why you guys keep giving her exactly the reaction she wants.

Being anti doesnt mean I have to blindly agree with every other anti.

Echo chambers are stupid regardless of which side theyre on. If my own community starts doing stupid shit im gonna call it stupid. If we criticize pro ai spaces for blindly agreeing with eachother, dogpiling people, and refusing to question their own side, then turn around and do the exact same shit ourselves, what exactly makes us better?

You can dislike witty and still understand her.

You can think shes cringe and still admit when shes right.

You can be anti ai and still tell another anti they're being fucking stupid.

And at some point you have to realize that the person youre supposedly laughing at has convinced an entire community of people who hate her to advertise her content for free.

Maybe stop feeding it?

Like yes!! I am anti ai. But when i see someone whos pro ai, actually take initiative to learn a little about what theyre trying to create, or atleast have pride in what they made, i cant help by admiring their craft.

It was shocking for me to see witty switch up a bit and show something she was proud of instead of her usual rage bait content. I love her song. It was made w ai but its good. As an anti, it doesnt hurt me to say that, because you can tell she put her soul into it.

If these people spent as much time hating on witty as they did drawing, then their art would actually fucking improve.

You arent an activist for fighting an invisible war online. Youre arguing against some rando on the internet. Do something else!

Anti-AI, Veganism, and Moralizing

• Upvotes

In my opinion, a comparison can be made between the anti-AI movement and veganism. Namely:

  • Both are based on a moral beliefs (animal cruelty, environment, artist rights), and argue that the world will become (or is) considerably worse if something doesn't happen.
  • Both are in opposition to the majority of the population which does not care, and will eat meat / use AI freely.
  • Both are probably morally right, at least in some aspects.
  • Both involve some people who will bludgeon the opposition with their moral superiority.

There's a stereotype about vegans. You know, the kind of person who loudly voices their opinions on animal products the moment they meet a non-vegan? Frankly, these people have arguably done the greatest harm to the vegan movement. The average person does not want to be moralized to. They like to do things they enjoy, and even if they might agree with your arguments, they will dig in the moment any moralizing is perceived. Maybe this works for friends and family who trust you, but the number of internet strangers who convert is vanishingly low. Rather, the main result of moralizing is that you feel morally superior over others and signal to your in-group.

The anti-AI person who comments "AI slop" is not much different than a vegan who comments "meat slop". If you're not a vegan and vegans started doing this in droves, I don't imagine that you would enjoy that, and you certainly won't become vegan. And if you *are* a vegan and vegans started doing this, I don't imagine you would think they're doing your movement any favors either. Whenever there's a moral issue that you genuinely want to change, I'd recommend not bludgeoning people. All it does is make you feel good and make them dig deeper into their beliefs.

Do you know the golden rule? Treat others how you want to be treated? I would recommend doing something similar. If a vegan started trying to proselytize to you, would you become vegan? If vegans called people murderers, would that change minds? If vegans commented "meat slop", what would you do?

If you are a vegan, substitute for someone who's morally better than you. Unless you're morally perfect, you can imagine someone better. Maybe they only eat local produce instead of imported food. Maybe they cycle instead of driving. Maybe they only buy fair trade. Maybe they organize demonstrations. If you're religious, maybe they're more pious. Maybe they donate 10% more of their income. Then, imagine that this person is going to confront you about your moral inferiority. How do you want them to act? What would best convince you to change? Does it involve the words "car slop"? Does it involve making jokes about gutting you like the animals you consume? Does it involve saying that you personally are complicit in slave labor? Or does it involve someone focusing on the system causing all the problems, and not individuals eating sandwiches? Would you rather vegans protest the animal industry, or protest your consumption?

If you genuinely think loud moralizers are a benefit to a movement, then be a loud moralizer. If you think PETA benefits veganism, then feel free to be PETA. If you think making jokes about how "we need to kill carnist" is the way to go, then do that. Otherwise, what you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.

Antis have been focusing on image and video models for years now, but maybe it's time to reconsider using things like chatgpt and Claude, because they also have stolen from artists? This was all made without a video or image model, and clearly the LLMs can use artist's styles as well even if they aren't generating videos or images.

I’m completely aware of what’s harmful and beneficial about artificial intelligence.

Some people are treating it like Pandora’s Box.

It’s valid to be concerned and have ire towards those who use something when they know that it can be harmful. But people can use those harmful things responsibly and in moderation.
