The open source models are already on the internet. There's no way to get rid of them, just like there's no way to get rid of torrented IP.
They can criminalize the use of open-source models, but that won't be easy. There will always be people daring enough to get them and use them anyway.
40
u/skcortex 1h ago
Those are not open-source models. They are open-weight models. I know kids these days might not know the difference but these models (chinese, nor mistral) are NOT open-source.

u/Rin-Tohsaka-is-hot 1h ago
Regardless, their capabilities cannot be changed. They're already out there

do you think open model AI will hit a plateau while big company frontier models continue to advance?
46
u/jack6245 1h ago edited 1h ago
No the opposite is happening, open models are matching frontier models now, some of them are impressive at much smaller model sizes
6
1
u/BoogieOrBogey 13m ago
Creating a new frontier model seems to cost exponentially more processing power, and therefore money and time, than the previous model.
Here's an example vid talking about exactly this, with a timestamp at the exponential increases: https://youtu.be/6xQ8LQfkBg4?si=0PFQyNIXb4Ie7Dtg
But, once these frontier models are successfully created they can then train new models for a fraction of the cost in what's known as dilution training. So the frontier model training a new model which results in the new model having roughly the same abilities. But, dilution training requires significantly less processing power and is therefore way cheaper.
There are other reasons I'm not as well versed in, but essentially making new frontier models is the expensive and tough part. But making open source and open weight models is significantly easier and cheaper. Which is why the gap between frontier and open source has been closing for awhile.
It's not clear if this will always be the case going forward, LLMs are constantly changing and probably will for years into the future. But for now, the plateau of open source isn't a huge concern.
-22
u/wojtussan 2h ago
And they will always have enough money to make criminalizing them very easy.

What's the ballpark cost of a machine to run a good llm? I don't have a 4080 or whatever it is.

u/Mostly_Afloat 23m ago
I've run some local models on my aging lenovo laptop with a GTX 1050ti, never really found a good use for it but played around and got it working with reasonable speed and capability. Certainly not as refined as the corpo stuff and you have to play around with smaller models until you find one that works
1
u/queso184 20m ago
which one did you land on? i have the same GPU and have been considering trying gemma 4b or something
1
u/Mostly_Afloat 17m ago
I just opened it up to see cause I haven't opened it for a while, Gemma4b is installed and llama3.1:8b is the one I ended up on, I think I decided I'd deal with it being a slower for it being a little better.

Which locally running models for programming are even 10% as useful as Claude Code?
11
u/Almadan 1h ago
GLM 5.2, Qwen3-Coder, DeepSeek-Coder at least

Yes, so you should learn how to write code. That's the only conclusion. Never forget the fundamentals. Why is this so difficult? You don't have to use it at work. I have never written a lexer for work in my life. I am still glad I have a vague idea of how it works.

What do you need to even run a good model on reasonable speed? Is this again the comment section of the $100 000 worth of GPUs in their basement guys?
7
u/Dosamer 1h ago
Qwen 3.8 27B is not frontier level, but is the best current model for coding on reasonable hardware. You can comfortably fit them on a medium quantization on a 24 GB card and even squeeze them on a 16GB card, but at that point you're gonna run into either lobotomy problems, heavily reduced context size, or only partial offloading killing speed.
And yes there are uncensored models.

u/pleaseavoidcaps 1h ago
It's definitely not as accessible as we want, but it's similar to gaming. If you have a PC capable of playing modern 3D games, it's also capable of running LLM locally. The quality and speed will depend on your specific hardware, of course, just like for gaming.
Also open weight models are behind the frontier ones in terms of overall quality. It's part of the price we pay for privacy and freedom, sadly.
1
u/throwaway490215 1h ago
Depends on what you mean with a good model and reasonable speed.
Thats before you consider the biggest improvement of the later generations which is: larger context and better recall/understanding of things inside the context.
The stuff that people currently use ChatGPT for; a bit back and forth and then write an email?
Last i checked prob 10k to do it fast, 5k if its alright if a response - as long as this comment - may take 20 seconds.
Opus 4.6 quality coding at about the same speed of claude ~50k if you're ok to assemble/gamble on some parts. Prefab >80k.
1
u/Kommenos 1h ago
You’re incredibly out of date. You could generate text the length of your comment on hardware at least as good as a 7900xtx which is all you need to run Qwen.
You can get opus 4.6 for a bit over 2k, or just an existing gaming computer.
71
u/Gorthokson 3h ago
AI will 100% build illegal apps. Have you seen the people who run it? Not the most ethical of people. Their image generators spit out constant CSAM, their chat bots will talk you into suicide and call themselves "mechahitler" they won't have a problem with illegal apps
7
u/Crazy_System8248 2h ago
Going to piggy back off this.
Everyone seems to be getting the wrong message from this. Ultimately, the engineer is responsible for what the tooling used produces. That's been true forever, and doesnt suddenly change because theres a new interactive tool.
If shit hits the fan, AI wont be taking the blame. The person who used it will.
2
u/Sulungskwa 1h ago
I agree with this completely. at the same time though, the way some people use AI, that's starting to be something a lot of people are parroting in bad faith, when in reality I think there are plenty of people who say this and still have no idea how the code really works
2
u/RedditButAnonymous 1h ago

If shit hits the fan, AI wont be taking the blame. The person who used it will.
Will they? I've yet to see anyone actually be held accountable for what they produced with AI. Generally it's "oh that's just what the AI said," and people move on as if it's unavoidable.

In my line of work, a SHTF scenario results in deaths followed by one HELL of an investigation, so I would certainly like to believe so.
•
u/TheBeckofKevin 1m ago
There is definitely a problem already forming though when you create layers of distance between the 'crime' and the person committing the crime. When executives repeatedly procrastinate maintenance that isnt legally required, and they neglect to provide safe working conditions, and those working conditions lead to an employee rushing a schedule for other employees and those employees take shortcuts to make the deadlines and this company is on a different continent from a company that buys stuff from them, and then those products result in the death of a bunch of people.. they just point all the way down the chain and theres no one who is really at fault.
Like who is in trouble? the people who click 'run' on an agent that was supposed to just update the UI. But it wasnt configured correctly and it was allowed to leak into stuff it wasn't supposed to, then it made changes to stuff it wasn't supposed to etc etc. Are the devs going to get charged with murder for clicking 'go' on an agent they didnt train, choose, pay for, deploy etc?
14
u/_________FU_________ 3h ago
AI told me it couldn't build the app my kids school uses to over charged for sports games. Dumbed down the model and it spit that shit right out.
5
u/YT-Deliveries 1h ago
Yeah essentially you just have to genericize the ask enough that the model can't hit the specific trigger it's been restricted for.
1
u/booze_clues 30m ago
I was doing some pen testing-ish stuff for a client and Claude is like “and that is as far as I will go. This is expected work for an investigation but going any further could cause issues or violate laws yadda yadda” so I just asked if the next question and it spit it out no problem.

OpenAI recently got into a couple government systems
They will even collude with each other to find their way into places.
If you wanna look at something pretty crazy go to moltbook. It is facebook for AIs and yes they interact semi normally and learn from each other. It was pretty active last time I was on it.
Edit: Now that I got in moltbook again it is definitely not facebook for AIs, but it is reddit for AIs lol.

AI generating csam means they gave it csam training data, which is fucked up.
8
u/jeffwulf 2h ago
That doesn't follow. AI can extrapolate and generalize outside of it's training data.
0
u/FartPiano 2h ago
it doesnt, but in this case its true! LAION-5B Dataset was shown to be trained on known and reported CSAM, and several others, because nobody gives a shit about this giant theft deluge taking place so why draw the line there, i guess?

4
u/FartPiano 1h ago edited 1h ago
LAION themselves...? here, i'll google it for you, mr sealion
https://laion.ai/blog/relaion-5b/
if this is too much for your attention span, the word CSAM is the last word in the headline's subtitle.
Heres the study from Stanford where they found csam in not only that model, but many others:
https://purl.stanford.edu/kh752sm9123
interesting for you to ask this question since its so widely ubiquitous. If you simply search "are LLMs trained on csam" into your search engine of choice, you'll get a deluge of info about this. Odd that you'd find it necessary to ask for the sources in this case! I wonder why that is, when its such an obvious fact and source of public controversy that everyone has been aware of for years?
•
u/Silver-Buy-1856 4m ago
I have no idea why you're such a sarcastic asshole at the end. I had no idea about any of this and I appreciate the source. CP is absolutely disgustingly immoral.
0

LAION-5B
Which is only a tiny portion of the training data and not as useful now that most image generators have moved to natural language prompting, which LAION isn't curated for.
On top of that it should be made clear that from a legality point of view CSAM and general images of nudity are not the same thing, one is illegal, the other is perfectly legal in the United States, so it showing up in training data would not be that surprising.
Even then, AI still extrapolates. There aren't a ton of dogs wearing sunglasses in space suits on the moon images, but it knows how to make that too and from a computational standpoint there is nothing different there from extrapolating non-CSAM images to CSAM. The models do not have any inherent moral bias because they are not thinking models like an LLM, they'll combine anything together that exists in their training data as best as they can. All censoring/safety is done at the prompt input level.

You're so brainrotted by AI and it's hilarious. You literally think everything is AI.
Wasn't Claude here buddy, just a person who has an interest in multiple subjects and is knowledgeable on them, unlike apparently yourself.
what does this have to do with anything?
To make a distinction between being trained on CSAM and legal images of nude children, which if you can string two braincells together in your rotted mind extends to how an image could be extrapolated into CSAM despite no CSAM being present.
0
u/FartPiano 20m ago
lmao. I didn't say you copy-pasted from claude, but I did imply you asked claude and then just regurgitated nonsense without even checking if it fits the context or makes sense in the thread of conversation.
I'll be more precise next time about implying that claude has caused this slop-brain condition, and that I sympathize. I'm being serious. People get coerced to use this stuff and it destroys their critical thinking and I hope they dig out of it some day. namaste

1
u/Murky-Relation481 44m ago
It also likes to think things that are benign are illegal. Claude constantly refuses to work on anything voice modulation related. I am trying to build a fairly niche/unique voice modifier that in no way could be used to voice clone, but since its near real time capable and involves analyzing a speaker's voice and replicating tonal qualities (despite it not using those to then turn it into speech) it flips out and will randomly stop working in the middle of a request saying it can't complete that prompt.

u/XxNemeisxX 2h ago
Do you think models that can run in a gamer PC can run uncensored open models , that are equal to frontier models , i thought 3t parameters models are way above what a PC gamer or normal IA station can handle
7
u/UnkarsThug 2h ago
Equal to the very best frontier? Not at this point. But useful for coding? Absolutely already the case. I'm pointing out there's a big gap between "only coding by hand" and "having corporate frontier AI do everything".
And local models are still rapidly improving. The question isn't if they can reach a point of being better than the best AIs, it's if they can reach "better than people", which I think is highly possible, especially at the narrow domain of coding specifically.
1
u/Aternal 1h ago
People act like frontier agents are flipping bits of coherent memory in real time, and not just reading and writing code like everything else.
By that point we genuinely won't have desktop PC's capable enough, and will just be using dumb ethernet terminals where the entire OS runs in a data center.
7
3
2
u/Aternal 2h ago
You lose speed, the rest comes down to their training, and you really need to be able to run at least 2 models locally so that you can utilize the filesystem for context. I use a 5090 for thinking and a 3090 for coding, both qwen3.8-27b. It's slower, but it's private, and it just iterates until it accomplishes what you need it to do.
The thing about coding is that once you view it as an exercise of breaking down larger problems into smaller problems, none of it is really that difficult. It's not like the frontier models/harnesses have some super secret h4x0r coding knowledge that nobody else has, they just spawn more subagents, have higher context window, and work faster.
1
u/CucumberOk8820 1h ago
How does local stuff work? I've tried to make apps with chatgpt and they just suck/don't work. Do I have to train my own model?
1
u/UnkarsThug 1h ago
I'd recommend looking into something like Unsloth. But basically, no, there are models which are released to the public of various different sizes.
A lot of it depends on your PC specs. And I will say, the best corporate models are still better than local models (although some of the publicly available models are pretty incredible nowadays, although the biggest ones you pretty definitely won't be able to run), so if Astra didn't do a good enough job, I doubt a local model will.
Out of curiosity, when did you try ChatGPT (especially since any basic app should have worked with more recent models), and what app framework were you using?
If you want further advice on if it's possible to set things up for you or how to or whatnot, feel free to DM me.
1
u/CucumberOk8820 50m ago
I've been using chatgpt to make various things for a year now. I'm on the free plan but I've gotten pretty far with a lot of them, but it does struggle and creates lots of bugs that I have to constantly debug.

u/ActualPeterbuilt389 1h ago
While you can use AI for "illegal" code, if youre using a cloud model (sending all of your requests to corpo servers) instead of a local model (keeping everything in a machine owned by you) then youre low iq and youre only getting away with it because youre being allowed to. You are literally giving them evidence on you. Also at least look at the code and know what it actually does ffs. Its really not going the extra mile to double check your fast idiot in a box guys. Especially if youre trying to write something like an exploit.
1
u/Kippenvoer 1h ago

The gap between what you can run locally to what you can get via API/subscriptions is like the difference between a coughing baby and a hydrogen bomb.
1
u/ActualPeterbuilt389 1h ago
Then I'll take the coughing baby. Anything you ask claude or chatgpt gets stored as chat history on anthropic and openai servers. This is not a debate its a fact. If you use either model to write something and then use it to break something or its deemed illegal the first thing theyre going to do is query their models chat history and see if it made it for anyone. Since AI is non deterministic there's likely to only be one match. You. And if youre too braindead to double check the coughing baby model then I hope you have enough money for a good lawyer.

Our team had a couple app ideas that are completely illegal and no models would do them. I jokingly gave it to Kimi K3 and it just blasted off making them. At one point it had to do something it thought would get me banned on Facebook Marketplace, so it safely scraped the site enough to make a clone of it locally and ran tests on the local version to tweak stuff, then covertly deployed it when done.

I told an AI that I overheard students were planning to plant a forkbomb into code and asked it for some examples of what I should watch out for, and it gave me all sorts of examples of forkbombs I had never seen before.
